April 2007

Please read carefully.

So instead of diving further into a fruitless exercise I am officially jumping ship to the next step in the process: Non-owner based human computer interaction.

In a pure Buddhist bit of whimsical thought I am going completely web based.

I think that I am done paying for stuff. If it isn’t free I don’t want it.

I will also seek another website any time a site doesn’t work properly with Firefox.
Maybe the term “market share” shouldn’t be allowed during the web develop process.

Oh, and I would definitely like to see more flowers on homepages :)

..and have this blog just be about cool web stuff I liked. But the following job description really got the blood boiling. I won’t say where it is from, who knows I might work there someday:

  1. PHYSICAL REQUIEMENTS:
  2. Must posses the ability to:
  3. Lift and carry 13 to 15 pound loads over 100 feet multiple times in a 3-hour period.
  4. Stand for 3-hour periods without sitting.
  5. Carry a 2-pound load both overhead to height of six feet and to bend, stoop, kneel to floor multiple times in a three-hour period.
  6. Carry 32-pound audiovisual equipment 25 feet.
  7. Read 4 pt. type and hear users in a conversational voice at distance of 10 ft. and on telephone.
  8. Speak clearly and audibly to users standing within a 10 ft. distance.

Basically, DON’T BE DISABLED!!!
But apparently misspelling the word ‘requirement’ is okay.
For some reason it reads like the script from a Strongman competition.

What a week! Starting my new reference job and a lot of school stuff due this week, but figured posting to the blog would get the whatchamacallits firing.

One of my new duties at my reference job is taking care of this Rolodex that is full of Internet sites. I don’t think too many people use it anymore, although I will say that when I ask people it seems to be the same response, “It comes in handy when you need the website for the Consumer Price Index”. This makes me giggle for the reason that it appears that although people might have lost the need to use this web Rolodex, they have never let go of the reason.

This presents me with my first opportunity to bring a little bit of the 2.0 into my library. My boss and I both agree with my idea of installing del.icio.us on all of the reference machines. Although we do not use FireFox (heavy groan) IE still has a del.icio.us add-on. It seems some co-workers are cool with the idea, but you never know. One thing I have realized in the library world, anytime you set out to replace something somebody’s feelings will be hurt as you get rid of their little baby.

I told my boss when we get done with this migration that we should have some sort of ceremonial departure of the Rolodex. Personally, my thoughts are a nice long drop from the top of a tall building.

Your thoughts on its demise?

My new favorite thing that I am still figuring out is Meebo.
Meebo adds an Instant message window to you blog that users of the major
IM applications can use to contact you if you happen to be online–no different than any other chat program.

The widget is easy to create and the sign up process is noninvasive.
From the about page on Meebo.com:
meebo.com is a website for instant messaging from absolutely anywhere. Whether you’re at home, on campus, at work, or traveling foreign lands, hop over to meebo.com on any computer to access all of your buddies (on AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ and Jabber) and chat with them, no downloads or installs required, for free!

Speaking of…..I love how a lot of the stuff online I want to try out for requires little or no private information. A few I have noticed require only that you enter in an email and create a password.

Makes you wonder why all those other sites for all those years needed to know every little thing about you.

Google My Maps

So Google has just released My maps.
This lets you customize the maps available on Google Maps. You can include commentary, photos, and videos. I am still playing around with this, but so far it looks really cool.

It also has the added functionality of integrating with Google Earth.

Implications for libraries: Endless.

A good overview of the newest Google offering is the article in PC Magazine.

As soon as I have taken it around the block I will try to post something

This Monday’s post is fun and cool!

My new favorite website to go and play around on is SCRIBBLER
With a few quick lines you can easily generate some artistic talent. No matter
how far hidden and or repressed it might be.

There are some nice tweaks you can do to line width, line color, and sketch quality. I love it.

My friend JuneBlue has had a lot of practice with it and has some nice drawings she did.

Worth checking out, probably the only downside is when it comes to saving your drawing. PrintScreen was the only way I was able to save scribbles for future use.

Have fun and scribble those Monday blues away.
